Frequently asked questions

Is ShareCARD a lender or an insurance company?

We get this question a lot. Here is what ShareCARD is, what it isn’t, and how farmers reach loans, insurance and supply contracts through it.

The short answer: No. ShareCARD doesn’t lend money or sell insurance. We connect farmers to the banks, SACCOs, insurers and buyers who do, by giving every farmer a verified identity and a record of how they farm and trade.

Does ShareCARD give farmers loans?

No. ShareCARD is not a microfinance institution and does not lend money to farmers.

We partner with banks, SACCOs and other lenders who want to lend to farmers. What usually holds them back is not knowing who the farmer is, where they farm or how they trade. ShareCARD gives them that verified information, so they can make lending decisions with confidence.

So is ShareCARD like insurance?

Not quite. Insurance is one of the services farmers can reach through ShareCARD, but we are not an insurance company.

Insurers need to know exactly who a farmer is and where their plot is before they can offer cover. ShareCARD provides that proof. The insurance itself comes from our insurance partners.

What does ShareCARD actually do?

ShareCARD is the system in the middle that connects farmers to the businesses and institutions that serve them.

1 · FarmersGet a FarmerCARD

A verified identity, a mapped farm and a record of what they buy and sell.

2 · AgribusinessesRecord the trade

Input dealers, buyers, SACCOs and processors register farmers and record transactions.

3 · PartnersOffer services

Lenders, insurers and buyers use the verified records to offer loans, cover and contracts.

Who does ShareCARD work with?

We work through organisations that already serve farmers:

  • Input dealers who sell seed, fertiliser and other inputs
  • Off-takers and buyers who purchase farmers’ produce
  • SACCOs and cooperatives that save with and lend to their members
  • Agro-processors that source raw materials from farmers
  • Agri-support organisations that train and organise farmers

When these organisations put their farmers on ShareCARD, those farmers can reach finance, insurance and supply contracts through them and through our partners.

If my business joins ShareCARD, do I lose my farmers?

No. You keep the relationship with your farmers. ShareCARD gives you the tools to know them better: who they are, what they grow and how they trade with you. It also connects them to services that help them grow, which makes them stronger customers and suppliers for you.

Who pays for the FarmerCARD?

The organisation issuing the card, such as a SACCO, cooperative or agribusiness, buys FarmerCARDs from ShareCARD at a fixed price that is the same for everyone. Some organisations cover the cost for their members; others pass it on to the farmer.

Either way, the farmer should never pay more than the organisation’s published card fee. If you’re asked for extra money to register or to get a card, please report it to us.

Who owns the farmer’s information?

Farmers keep their rights over their own information. Each farmer gives consent when they register, and their details are shared only with the organisations they work with and the services they choose. Personal details stay hidden from anyone whose role does not allow them to see them, in line with Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act.
